TEHRAN (Reuters) - The brother of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was jailed on Wednesday for five years in corruption cases, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported.

Faridoun came before noon to the prosecutor's office and was transferred to Evin prison where he was sentenced to serve his sentence.

Faridoun, who is also Rouhani's special adviser, was arrested in July 2017 for his name in corruption cases.

He was charged with "financial crimes" but was released the day after his arrest after paying a bail of about 9.3 million dollars, local media reported.

His trial began in February, and the judiciary announced on October 1 that he had been sentenced on appeal to five years' imprisonment with force, an unspecified fine and a repayment of the “bribes” he was accused of taking.

Hassan Rouhani and Hussein Faridoun do not share the same family name. The president changed his name as a young man.
