Kenya's Brigid Kosgei broke the marathon world record on Sunday in Chicago, 2:14:04, scrapping British Paula Radcliffe, whose record was 2003.
The day after the feat of his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge, the first man to run the marathon under two hours (1h59 min 40 sec) in conditions not approved in Vienna, Kosgei, 25, removes 1 minute and 21 seconds to the previous record , established by Paula Radcliffe on April 13, 2003 in London.
A month after running in early September the fastest half marathon in history (1:04 min 28 sec, a record however not approved), it won for the second year in a row in Chiacgo and won its second marathon of the year after London in April.
Accompanied by two hares, Kosgei left very quickly and always remained in the nails of the record. It explodes its previous mark of more than 4 minutes, and ahead of the 42,195 km run Ethiopian Ababel Yeshaneh (2h20.51) and Gelete Burka (2h20.55).
On the men's side, Kenyan Lawrence Cherono won in 2 h 05: 45, in a race he finished in the sprint ahead of Ethiopia's Dejene Debela (2h05.46) and Asefa Mengstu (2h05.48). ).
Britain's Mo Farah, winner last year in Chicago, finished eighth in 2 h 09 min 58 sec.
His expected rival, the American Galen Rupp gave up.
