November 13, 2017The investigation by the Rome public prosecutor on possible responsibilities in the sinking of a boat of Syrian migrants on 11 October 2013 in Maltese waters, not far from Lampedusa, with over 200 survivors, 26 dead and one estimate of 260 missing.

The investigating judge Giovanni Giorgianni has decided to dissolve the reserve, rejecting the request for dismissal requesting new investigations.

The investigations of the prosecutor's office concerned four officers of the Italian Navy and three of the Coast Guard.

Libra Navy ship was accused of not having responded to the continuous and desperate requests for relief sent by castaways and, by radio, by the crew of a Maltese military plane. After 5 hours the barge laden with migrants sank, although Libra was less than an hour away.

For this fact, two investigations were opened. For both proceedings the Public Prosecutor of Rome Giuseppe Pignatone had filed the request for dismissal that the GIP today rejected, giving reason to the families of the people who died in the shipwreck.
