03 October 2018Luca Traini, the 29-year-old author of the shooting in Macerata against migrants on 3 February, was sentenced to 12 years for the crimes of massacre aggravated by racial hatred and abusive port of weapon. This was established by the judges of the Assize Court of Macerata after a council chamber lasting less than 2 hours. The request of the Public Prosecutor of Macerata was thus accepted. In addition to the penalty, the accused will also have to serve three months of probation and will have to compensate the civil parties with sums to be quantified in civil. The defense has announced an appeal.

"The sentence leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, not only for the size of the sentence, but for the alleged existence of a case such as that of the massacre". Luca Traini's lawyer, lawyer Giancarlo Giulianelli, said this, leaving the Macerata court. The defender expected "a sentence of around 10 years".

"I had a difficult childhood but I am neither crazy nor borderline". Before the sentence, Traini read some papers written by him, in which he recognizes his faults, he "repents", and writes: "My gesture is not related to the color of the skin: a little good can be both white and black ".

At the beginning of the hearing, the Macerata Procuratorate filed the report of the psychologists who examined Traini during the temporary detention in the Piacenza prison.

Traini, now in prison in Ancona, had been transferred for some time to the Emilian district house after he broke out on 7 June: just before he had heard that the accusations of murder against two of the three Nigerian pushers had fallen (Lucky Awlima and Desmond Lucky) initially arrested for killing and dismembering 18-year-old Pamela Mastropietro in Macerata - the girl had also hired heroin - along with Innocent Oseghale who is still in jail for the massacre.
