- The big news for the year is a show in the quarry in Degerhamn. There will be movie shows and opera songs during art night. It gets really cool, ”says Pia Axelsson, Öland's Harvest Party manager.

During the weekend, around 200,000 people are expected to visit the island and enjoy everything from local art to locally produced food and, of course, plenty of pumpkins.

- There are unusually many pumpkins this year considering that it has been two really dry years.

Onion board of 5000 onions

A recurring tradition is the large onion board that the artist Theo Janson creates and sets up in Ventlinge on southern Öland. This year, the board represents Eketorp's castle.

- I chose the bail as a motive because it was relevant during the year since the county museum closed its operations and the municipality took over it, says Theo Janson.

The board consists of about 5000 bulbs, which corresponds to 700 kilos of bulbs. Each onion sits on a nail and the entire board is approximately 21 square meters.

- We usually leave it out in October. It depends a little on how much leeks I used. It is the most sensitive onion.

Most visitors on Saturday

Around 900 activities are organized on the island during the weekend and it is an event that has become increasingly important for those who live and work in Öland.

- The revenue from this weekend means that more and more people can stay open a few days a week even during the off-season. In addition, many who come from far away already come the weekend before and stay all week. But most people usually do it on Saturday when those who come over the day visit the island, says Pia Axelsson.
