• USA: Colt suspends the manufacture of assault rifles for civilians in the US because the market is saturated

At least one person has died and five others have been injured Thursday in a shooting in Washington, authorities said.

The shooting occurred at 10 pm local time (02.00 GMT Friday) in the neighborhood of Columbia Heights.

Police commander Stuart Emerman told reporters that the shooting is still under investigation but could have occurred from a car with an assault rifle, without knowing the reasons.

The victims - five men and a woman of legal age - were in the courtyard of an apartment complex. Of the five injured, at least one is in serious condition.

The Washington Police reported a second shooting with at least three wounded occurred half an hour after the first one on the other side of the city, although for the moment there are no indications that they are related, Emerman said.

In Washington and its metropolitan area - as well as in other cities in the country - shootings are common, many related to gang violence.

The city, which barely has 700,000 inhabitants , so far this year has already registered 123 homicides, plus another 90 in its metropolitan area, most with firearms.

In 2018 the figure was 160 homicides in Washington and 120 in the suburbs, for a total of 280.

Although the figure is high, it is far from the records of the beginning of the century , with a peak in 2002 of 262 murders in Washington and 189 in its metropolitan area, for a total of 451.
