Winter has come to tarfala: "Here's the snowstorm"

Technically, winter has not come yet because the station had four days in a row with average temperature below zero degrees. However, according to meteorologist Pererik Åberg, the forecast is certain as the fifth day had an average temperature of three minus degrees. The start date for winter 2019 in Tarfala will be set for September 15.

- It can be seen as quite early, but it has happened that Tarfala received winter already in August, so it is not record time, says Pererik Åberg.

He says it counts as winter when the average temperature has been below zero degrees for five days.

When SVT News Norrbotten calls Torbjörn Karlin at Tarfala Research Station, it is snowstorm during Thursday.

- The last three days it has been snowing and now it is blowing. We have three minus degrees right now. It's just wearing long underwear and warmer clothes, he says.
