In response to the enforcement of the Ainu Measures Promotion Act, which specified the Ainu people as “Indigenous Peoples” for the first time in law, the government granted a grant at the Cabinet meeting on the 6th to implement regional promotion measures that take advantage of Ainu culture. We have decided on a basic policy that includes the creation of a system.

According to this, the national and local governments will collaborate from the viewpoint of the Ainu people, such as collecting trees in the national forest and salmon fishing in the river, For the local government planning a regional promotion plan that makes the best use of, we have paid out grants from the country.

In addition, the aim is to reach 1 million visitors annually at Upopoi, the Ainu culture center, which is being developed with the aim of opening in April next year.

Secretary of the Secretariat said at the press conference after the cabinet meeting, “We will work together with the government to realize a society that respects the pride of Ainu people based on the basic policy.”

Upopoi entrance fee is 1200 yen for adults, 600 yen for high school students, and free for junior high school students and younger.
