MADRID (Reuters) - Former Barcelona and Spain coach Luis Enrique has offered his condolences over the death of his daughter at the age of nine after a fight with cancer on Thursday.

Stars such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Swayze and many others expressed their grief and condolences to Enrique, who sacrificed his job as La Roja coach in June to spend more time with his daughter, who lost a five-month struggle against bone cancer.

"Our daughter Chana died this afternoon (Thursday) at the age of nine, after a five-month struggle with bone cancer," Enrique said in a statement.

"We want to thank everyone who has overwhelmed us with warm feelings over the past few months," he said.

The Barcelona players began their training today by standing a minute of silence on the spirit of the daughter of their former coach, who achieved him titles of the league, cup and Champions League.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeo sent his condolences on behalf of the Spanish champion and wrote on Twitter "all the support and sympathy to Luis Enrique and his wife and all his family in this painful time," adding: "Every Barcelona family is affected by the loss of Chana.

In turn, the League of La Liga clubs announced on Friday that the matches of the first and second sections will see everyone standing before the start of a minute of mourning for the spirit of Enrique's daughter.

"We would like to express our sincere condolences to Luis Enrique and all his family members, and we unite with them in their pain during these difficult moments," the league said in a statement.

For his part, the Spanish Football Federation demanded that everyone stand a minute of mourning for Enrique's daughter before all matches in all official competitions to be held early next week.

The Spanish Football Federation (UEFA) also demanded that UEFA take a moment of silence for Enrique's daughter ahead of Spain's international matches against Romania and the Faroe Islands in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

The two matches will be played on the fifth and ninth of next month, and come in the Group F qualifiers for Euro 2020.
