  • Newspaper library: Donald Trump announces that the US withdraws from the nuclear agreement with Iran

Iranian President Hasan Rohaní said today that in order for the situation to change and "positive developments" to occur, the United States must "eliminate all sanctions" imposed on Iran.

"We are not looking to simply take a picture with someone," Rohani said one day after a possible meeting with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, was discussed at the G7 summit to reduce the current tensions.

French President Emmanuel Macron invited Biarritz to the Iranian Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif . The interview took place at the town hall in the town, outside the summit's workplaces, Iñaki Gil reported.

The meeting was "positive," according to a French government source. Zarif had, however, been dismissed by the United States as an intermediary less than a month ago by imposing sanctions , which Iran now claims to be suspended if it intends to establish a positive dialogue.

Although the Elysium implied that Donald Trump was aware of this meeting, the president responded with a "no comment" (no comments) after being asked about the facts. Later, the president of the United States said that Macron had consulted him. "He asked for my approval. I don't consider it disrespectful at all," he explained.

Trump said Monday that he is willing to meet with Rohaní , "if the circumstances are correct," while insisting that the 2015 Iranian nuclear weapons agreement was "ridiculous."

The US president said he had "good feelings" with Iran, although he said that any new nuclear agreement should imply that Iran does not have access to the atomic weapon or develop ballistic missiles "for much longer."

In a televised speech, Rohaní said that "the key to positive developments in the relations of the two countries is in the hands of Washington," which abandoned the nuclear agreement with Iran in May 2018 and imposed sanctions again.

"The change in our behavior with those who imposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran and committed economic terrorism begins with their repentance," he said.

Therefore, he urged Washington to abandon its current "wrong way" and respectfully recognize "the Islamic system (of Iran) and the rights of the Iranian nation."

"Bow your head to the great nation of Iran and as a result the situation will change ... Our policy is clear: if they return to their commitments, we will also do so and seek to solve the problems in a reasonable way," he said.

Rohaní insisted that Iran does not want to develop the atomic bomb : "Our military will and doctrine is based on conventional weapons, and we are not looking for weapons of mass destruction," he said.

The possibility of a meeting between Trump and Rohaní had been announced minutes before by French President Emmanuel Macron , who said that "the conditions are in place" for that meeting to take place and he hopes it can be closed "in the coming weeks".

"Trump wants a much longer period (for the deal) and more monitored sites. On the other hand, we can convince the Iranians to go in that direction if we give them financial compensation," Macron said.

Due to these sanctions imposed by the US, the Iranian authorities stopped in the last months of fulfilling some of their commitments with the pact as the uranium storage limit and its enrichment level.

The tension between Iran and the United States has not been limited to the nuclear issue since a series of attacks on tankers and tankers and the demolition of drones have been recorded in the Persian Gulf since last May.
