The back to school allowance was paid Tuesday, August 20 to 3 million families. It is provided on a means-tested basis to families with children between 6 and 18 years old. Its amount varies between 368 and 402 euros. And it's often a real help for parents.

Schoolbags, kits and pens as far as the eye can see. No doubt, it's soon school. We are less than 15 days of the return. For many families, it's time for shopping. And some have waited to receive the back to school allowance to get started.

" As soon as it happened, we went shopping. It gives the opportunity to please the children, to be able to say "yes" to them when they see something that they like, more easily in any case than without the allowance, "explains Mélissa, mother of two little girls.

Considerable help for the poorest households

The ARS helps families buy school supplies but not only. For many, it is also used to pay for children's activities. Soraya has already done some of her back-to-school races in July. This mother of three has the habit of using the allowance for other expenses.

" I also use it for clothes, for books, even for their outings, " she explains. Last year, the ARS helped us pay for piano lessons. This is not given and as a result, we put a good part of the allocation in this activity .

Estimated cost of the start for a child in primary: 180 euros

In store, the period after the payment of the ARS is always more loaded. " Already, between yesterday and today, we see in store that there are more customers, says Melyna, head of the school department. Last year, the premium was paid on August 16 and from that date, there is really an increase of 18% between the weeks before and the day the allowance is paid. "

In any case, this allowance from the Family Allowance Fund considerably alleviates the school budget for families. The estimated cost of back to school for a child in primary school is 180 euros. For a high school student, it's at least double.
