- Health. 40 people affected by an outbreak of listeriosis related to a brand of meatloaf
The Ministry of Health and Families investigates whether a pregnant woman who was in the last trimester of pregnancy has lost her baby due to the outbreak of listeriosis detected in Seville due to the consumption of shredded meat, as sources from the Board have indicated to EL MUNDO.
The pregnant woman, who was in the last three weeks of gestation, entered Monday in the emergency department of the Virgen Macarena Hospital in Seville with a hemorrhage that triggered the abortion of the baby, as the newspaper Abc advanced. In the placenta of the pregnant woman was the bacterium of listeriosis, something that "is not something so infrequent", that "sometimes happens" and "does not have to be the cause of death," said sources of Health.
Counseling sources have indicated that more thorough analyzes are being done to determine the cause of the baby's death and whether or not it is related to the listeriosis outbreak. At the moment, it is unknown if the pregnant woman consumed infected meatloaf.
Hospitalized
Meanwhile, a total of 24 people are still hospitalized on Saturday in several hospitals in Seville, four of them in the ICU, because of the outbreak of listeriosis detected in meatloaf items distributed by a company in the Sevillian town of Burguillos.
Six of these patients are admitted to the Virgen del Rocío hospital, one of them, in the ICU; four others in the Virgin Macarena; five more in the Virgen de Valme, one of them in the ICU; one more in the ICU of the San Juan de Dios de Bormujos and the remaining eight in the Nisa de Castilleja de la Cuesta Hospital, one of them in intensive care.
The Ministry of Health decreed last Thursday a health alert for this outbreak of listerioris, detected in batches of roasted meat of the brand Mechá that have already been repeated from the market and that has affected 44 people.
Listeriosis is caused by a bacterium that contaminates raw foods and when consumed causes symptoms such as fever, headaches or diarrhea, which are not usually serious, but can be serious in pregnant women, young children, the elderly or people with low defenses.
Investigation
The Patient Advocate Association has sent a letter to the Superior Prosecutor of Andalusia, Ana Tarrago, to request "an ex officio investigation and clearance of responsibilities" for the listeriosis outbreak.
In a statement, the association, which bases its request in article 262 of the Law of Criminal Procedure (Lecrim), "which obliges us who by their position profession or trade had news of any public crime to report it immediately to the Judge or the Prosecutor "has asked to know " the quality controls that had been carried out by the Junta de Andalucia ".
In addition, he has criticized the actions of the Autonomous Administration in this case for "the negligence with which this situation has been transmitted to the public" and has described that "there has been tranquility where you have to immediately put means".
In the opinion of this association, it is a high-risk alarm and immediate attention "and in this regard has labeled" minimum "measures taken by the Board and that its statements have been" minimizing a case as serious as this " Along the same lines, he has referred to the statements of the Chairman of the Board, Juanma Moreno, for, in his opinion, subtracting "importance and concern" to contagion.
The Deputy Director of Health Protection of the Ministry of Health, Jesús Peinado , said Friday that on August 14, the preparation of the product was already suspended and he retired from all the establishments in addition to informing through the means so that "yes in their homes they have that brand of roasted meat, don't consume it. "
"He has been very diligent, has acted immediately. The health risk has been minimized as much as possible," said Peinado.
The manager of the company Magrudis, supplier of the 'Mecha' roasted meat infected by listeriosis, José Marín , also said Friday that they are conducting a parallel investigation to find out what has been the focus of this outbreak, in addition to ensuring that it meets with "all security protocols". Marín has indicated that it is a microscopic bacterium and "it will take some time to remove it", but he has said that they are in it.
