Kenyan justice on Friday sentenced two Kenyan rugby sevens, Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba, to 15 years in prison for gang raping a singer in February 2018.
The two sportsmen, members of the Nairobi Harlequins team, were found guilty on August 8 by a Kenyan court, during a trial where witnesses had evoked a "rape culture" in the world of local rugby.
Judge Martha Mutuku announced the sentence, stressing the need for a "deterrent sentence".
Frank Wanyama, 24, and Alex Olaba, 23, both students, who were sentenced to the maximum penalty for gang rape, participated in several 7-man rubgy tournaments on the national team.
