But Yemen's contemporary history is also bloody with a weak central power and well-armed clans. Yemen is the booklet as large as Sweden and has about 28 million inhabitants.

Most live along the coasts or in the valleys of the mountains. Large parts are mountain or desert and militarily difficult to control. The US war in the Persian Gulf and the conflict in the Horn of Africa have also hit Yemen with refugees and instability.

Civilians hit hard

Above all, the Saudi Alliance has been helping the government side with extensive aerial bombings that have hit the civilian population hard. The alliance blocked by ports has caused famine. The brutal warfare of the huhirebells has also hit civilians hard.

The assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and criticism of the Saudi Alliance's brutal war has pushed Saudi Arabia and their allies to peace talks. And Iran's arming of the Huthirbells with rockets that hit targets in Saudi Arabia has also put pressure on Iran and the Huthirbells.

Signed agreement in Sweden

So when the parties met after three years of war in Swedish Rimbo in mid-December, an agreement was signed that the UN now hopes will lead to peace in the rest of the country as well:

  • An armistice in and around the port city of Hudayda, which normally imports 2/3 of the country's food needs
  • The parties withdraw their troops from Hudayda
  • Thousands of prisoners of war are to be exchanged.
