The central prison of Yaoundé was the object Monday, July 22nd of a mutiny, carried out by prisoners incarcerated within the framework of the English crisis.

Shots rang out in the Yaoundé Kondengui prison center until around midnight on Monday, and even as the mutiny began in the afternoon. The penitentiary is known for its overcrowding.

Several witnesses say that this widespread resentment was initiated by a few hundred detainees, identified as having been imprisoned as part of the Anglophone crisis. They demanded their release and the cessation of the war in the North West and South West regions.

Very quickly, they were joined by other hundreds of prisoners who denounced to them the slowness in the judicial procedures, source of the prison overpopulation. The situation has become out of control. In the early evening, a fire was observed in the administrative premises of the prison where there were also reported acts of looting and looting.

Protesters - some of whom estimate at least 1,500 people - demanded only the Minister of Justice or the Prime Minister himself.

In view of the magnitude of the situation, the army was called in as reinforcements and a 500-meter security cordon was erected all around the prison.
