Jérémy Chardy (77th overall) beat Benoît Paire 6-7 (4/7), 7-5, 6-3 in the first round at the 500 clay court tournament in Hamburg, during a first meeting between the two Frenchmen on ATP tour, Monday.
Breaked up in the fifth game of the third inning, Paire (28 world) missed his chance at the next game, where he had a ball to break.
The N.3 French no longer had a single opportunity then to redo his late service. Worse, at 5-3, he gave his service again, not without having saved four match points in this last game, and finally give up after 2 hours 35 minutes of exchanges.
Chardy (N.10 French) could meet in the second round another countryman, Richard Gasquet (65th in the world and N.8 French, if he beats in his first round the Sumit Nagal Indian, 207th in the world, from qualifying.
