Nearly one in five (19%) of US Twitter users follow President Donald Trump's official account of nearly 62 million subscribers on the social network, according to a survey released Monday by the Pew Research Center.

The survey shows that more than half of these Internet users (54%) are in favor of the policy pursued by the White House tenant and his often controversial tweets.

The Pew Research Center suggests, however, that Trump's influence on Twitter, his social network of choice, remains limited, as only 22% of US adults have an account on this platform.

The 45th US president is also less influential on Twitter with Americans than his predecessor Barack Obama, followed by 26% of Twitter users in the United States (107 million subscribers).

Among social network users, nearly 3 in 10 Republicans follow Mr. Trump, while they are only 13% among Democrats.

The survey was conducted between December 2018 and July 2019 on a sample of 2,388 US adults on Twitter who agreed to share their public data with the research center.

These figures are being released as Trump is under fire for a series of tweets against colored Democrats whom he has called in particular to "return" to their country of origin - even as many of those targeted were born in the United States.
