US President Donald Trump wants to make his former budget director Mick Mulvaney the interim chief of staff in the White House. That announced Trump on Twitter.

.... I look forward to working with him in this new capacity as we continue to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! John wants to stay until the end of the year. He is a GREAT PATRIOT and I want to thank him for his service!

Mulvaney has done "outstanding" work in his previous role as budget director, Trump wrote. He looks forward to working with him in his new position. His reigning Chief of Staff Kelly praised Trump as a "great patriot". He thanked the ex-general for his services.

A week ago, the US president announced that the White House chief of staff, John Kelly, would have to leave the post by the end of the year. Trump's former chiefs of staff had a hard time in the White House. Kelly had followed the luckless Reince Priebus in July 2017. However, the relationship between the respected four-star general and the president is said to have worsened quickly.

Mulvaney comes from South Carolina and described US President Barack Obama's fiscal policy as "eight years of uncontrolled fiscal and spending policy."

As a favorite for the succession of Kelly was the chief of staff of Vice President Mike Pence, Nick Ayers. Ayers announced on Sunday that he would leave the White House. Another candidate was the former governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, traded. Christie, however, gave the president a refusal on Friday.

Christie's message to The New York Times stated that it was an honor for Trump to consider him for the post. "However, I told the president that it is not the right time for me or my family to take on this difficult task."
