Giovanni van Bronckhorst will leave Feyenoord after this season. The 43-year-old coach, who has an expiring contract, has informed the club management that he is ready for a new challenge after four years.

"I have thought a lot about whether I would like to remain head of Feyenoord for one or more years after this season, which was a very difficult decision, because Feyenoord is in my heart", says Van Bronckhorst on Thursday at the Feyenoord site.

"However, in my career I have always followed my feelings and my feeling now says that I should not do that, it's okay."

Van Bronckhorst, who as a player went through the entire Feyenoord youth training and played two hundred games for the first team in two periods, was appointed head coach at De Kuip in May 2015. He was the successor of the dismissed Fred Rutten.

The 106-time international of the Dutch national team has been very successful with Feyenoord in recent years. In 2017 he led the Rotterdam team to the first league title since 1999. In addition, he won twice the KNVB cup with his team (2016 and 2018) and twice the Johan Cruijff Schaal (2017 and 2018).

Feyenoord understands decision

Van Bronckhorst said earlier this month at a training camp in Marbella, Spain that he had agreed with Feyenoord to talk about his future in February. "I'm not talking about it myself," he said.

The former player of RKC Waalwijk, Glasgow Rangers, Arsenal and FC Barcelona has made the decision earlier.

Technical director Martin van Geel would have liked to talk to Van Bronckhorst next month about a contract extension, but he shows understanding for his trainer's decision.

"'Gio' is really an emotional person," says Van Geel. "And if he himself has the idea of wanting something different after this season, we can only respect that, and we are already very grateful to him for his great contribution to the club's recent, unprecedented success."

The technical director states that Feyenoord will take the time to look for a successor for Van Bronckhorst.

'Much to contend for this season'

Feyenoord only seems to be able to win a prize this season in the cup. The fifteen-time Dutch champion qualified for a semi-finals on Wednesday by a 4-1 victory over Fortuna Sittard.

In the Eredivisie, Feyenoord is third after eighteen matches, with 13 points behind leader PSV. The Rotterdammers play in De Kuip De Klassieker on Sunday against number two Ajax, which has an eleven-point lead.

"There is still a lot to contend for this season," says Van Bronckhorst. "We have to secure European football, through the competition or through the cup tournament, which makes sense and I look forward to it."

Van Geel: "Together we will do everything we can to give the cooperation a suitable and therefore a beautiful final in the coming months through the competition or the cup tournament."
