US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo begins a tour of Europe on Monday, 11 February, in Hungary where he meets Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The head of the American diplomacy continues his visit to Slovakia on February 12 and then in Poland where takes place, Wednesday and Thursday, a meeting devoted to the influence of Iran in the Middle East.
The meeting between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and the head of the American diplomacy Mike Pompeo is scheduled for Monday, February 11, 2019 in the late afternoon. Mr Pompeo will then address the press alongside Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto. This is the first official visit of the Trump administration to the Hungarian government, which is one of the few supporters of the US president claimed in a European Union that is overwhelmingly critical of its attacks on multilateralism and unpredictable diplomacy.
In September 2018, the Hungarian National Conservative Prime Minister did not hesitate to describe Trump as an " icon " for the sovereignist movement, after the anti-"globalist" speech of the latter before the General Assembly of the UN. This ideological closeness allowed a warming of relations between Washington and Budapest while Viktor Orban was regularly criticized by the Obama administration for the attacks on freedom of the press, justice and civil society. Viktor Orban, who has been in power since 2010, has also been the subject of numerous reminders to the European institutions on these issues.
However, the Trump administration does not issue him a blank check since Mike Pompeo must meet in Budapest the rights organizations targeted in recent years by the Hungarian government, which accuses them of being in favor of immigration, obsession and the workhorse of Viktor Orban. The latter has also embarrassed the United States by attacking the Central European University (CEU), a prestigious American law firm founded in Budapest by the American billionaire of Hungarian origin George Soros.
The oriental tropism of the Hungarians in question
Resistance platoon of Monday's meeting: Washington is worried about the oriental tropism of Hungarian diplomacy, very active in the development of its political and economic relations with Russia and China. Viktor Orban has received Vladimir Putin twice in 2017 and calls for a lifting of European sanctions against Russia. Moreover, China is also at the heart of all the diplomatic efforts of Viktor Orban who decreed in 2014 " the opening to the East " of Hungary.
Finally, Mike Pompeo wishes to discuss with Hungary the recent agreement between Budapest and the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei for the development of the 5G network in this country.
