Known for his cookie-cut statements, which are often exaggerated, sometimes completely false, Donald Trump assures him: he "really tries" to tell the truth.

"I always want to tell the truth. When I can, I tell the truth. And sometimes it happens that something different happens or that there is a change, but I still like to be sincere, " he told ABC late Wednesday. "I'm trying, I'm really trying," he said.

The Republican billionaire is known to improvise during impromptu statements before the press at the White House or campaign meetings. His associates are often on the alert, the former real estate mogul regularly making surprise announcements and statements that immediately make the headlines.

Often, too, the American president says things that are clearly exaggerated, sometimes outright false or at least not supported by facts.

More than 5,000 false statements

As when he assured that "unknown Middle Easterners" had infiltrated the "caravan" of Central American migrants walking through Mexico in order to reach the United States to file an asylum claim. After heavily suggesting that he associated the "Middle Easterns" in question with terrorists, he then conceded that there was "no evidence" of their presence among the migrants mentioned. But even admitting this, he added that "it could very well be the case" .

The Washington Post has created a project that tries to identify all the false statements of the president. At the last count in September, there were more than 5,000.
