A Turkish court on Tuesday appealed stiff prison sentences against former members of the opposition daily Cumhuriyet , whose trial became a symbol of press freedom violations under the presidency of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Six of these journalists will have to return to prison, while the others - sentenced to heavier sentences in the first instance - can still turn to the Court of Cassation.

" Prison once again. Take care of yourself ... "Cartoonist Musa Kart, winner of last year's International Press Drawing Prize, wrote on Twitter the announcement of the verdict of the Regional Court of Appeals. Istanbul.

The court ruled on the sentencing of fourteen former journalists and employees of Cumhuriyet , one of Turkey's last opposition titles.

In April 2018, they received sentences ranging from two and a half to eight years in prison for " terrorist propaganda " and " assistance to a terrorist organization ". The cartoonist Musa Kart and five of his former colleagues, who had been sentenced to less than five years in prison, will return to prison to serve the rest of their sentence - a year for most of them. They can still appeal to the Constitutional Council, but this will not prevent their return to detention.

As for the other Cumhuriyet employees, including former director Akin Atalay and former editor Murat Sabuncu, who were sentenced to more than five years at first instance, they retain the right to appeal to the Court of Cassation and therefore remain free, for now.
