A giant tuna was sold for $ 3 million at the first auction this year at Tokyo's fish market, a record high for the company it bought.

This valuable and endangered species went to Kyomura, which has the world's most famous sushi restaurant chain in Japan, and achieved a new record in 2013, paying half of the new amount.

The fish, weighing 279 kilograms, was caught off the coast of Aomori, northern Japan.

"The tuna looks very appetizing and fresh, but I think I've overdone it," restaurant owner Kiyoshi Kyumura told reporters before the market later.

Tuna is one of the most expensive fish in the world to be used in preparing sushi, but experts warn that the growing demand for it has made it an endangered species.
