An Iraqi security source said today that the arrest of Aws al-Khafaji, leader of the faction of Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas, one of the components of the popular crowd from his residence in central Baghdad.

The Baghdad police officer Muayad al-Jabri said that a special force of the security of the popular crowd arrested al-Khafaji from his residence in the Karrada district of Baghdad and took him to an unknown destination without knowing the reasons.

Al-Khafaji revealed in a television interview that the killing of writer and novelist Alaa Mashzoub in Najaf province last week came after writing an article criticizing Iran.

Al-Khafaji, who is known for his views on all forms of interference in Iraq - including Iran's interventions - said one of the writers, Alaa Mashzoub, wrote articles criticizing Iran for killing "it is not Iran's fault but our guilt, killing him with love for Iran."

He has known his writings criticizing foreign interference in the country's affairs and criticizing the negative role of some clerics over the past years.
