The spokesman for the US Department of State, Heather Nauert, is abandoning Donald Trump's offer to become the new ambassador for the United Nations.

A statement issued by the ministry states that Nauert does not want to work as a UN ambassador in the "interests of her family".

"The last two months have really been a catastrophe for my family, so it is best for my family to retire as a candidate", Nauert writes in the statement in which she thanks Trump and foreign minister Mike Pompeo for her confidence.

The appointment of Nauert as a UN ambassador did not run smoothly, because the ministry never formally submitted its name to the Senate who must approve the appointment.

Nauert was Trump's second choice to succeed Haley

Nauert had to succeed Nikki Haley, who unexpectedly announced in October to leave as the American UN envoy. The spokesman has little experience in the political or diplomatic world.

In April 2017 Nauert was appointed as spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Before that she was a reporter at Fox News .

After the appointment of Mike Pompeo as Minister for Foreign Affairs, the role of Nauert became more important. In addition, she would maintain a good relationship with Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter.

Trump hoped to nominate Dina Powell in October as Haley's successor. Powell, former Trump National Security Adviser and Goldman Sachs top lady, also thanks for the job.
