Shots fired at mosque in New Zealand, possibly several dead

The local police confirmed that shots were fired, but could not yet say whether the shooting was in or near the mosque. In addition, no announcements were made about the number of victims.

According to the New Zealand television channel TVNZ , at least six people died in the first incident and dozens of people were injured.

In the early afternoon a shooter is said to have entered the mosque in Christchurch while believers were engaged in prayer. Local media report that witnesses have seen multiple victims, including children, lying on the floor.

Several armed officers were walking around in the center of Christchurch. Residents are called to stay in their homes. A local media photographer said there were three seriously injured on the steps of the mosque. An eyewitness says he has heard at least twenty shots.

The police could not yet confirm reports of a second shooting at another mosque in nearby Linwood.
