According to the findings of the internal investigation committee of the African Commission on Friday, 23 November, there are many practices of moral and sexual harassment in the institution.

The report was commissioned last May by African Union Commission President Moussa Faki Mahamat. The investigators interviewed 88 people, who testified anonymously.

The case is part of an anonymous letter last spring. According to the high-level committee set up to investigate, three people came to testify what they would have suffered. But they then retracted. No indication of why, the conditions of this flip-flop.

In any case, the AU Commission statement quotes in extenso the findings of the investigators, proof that they are not taken lightly. They evoke "kings makers", able to cash in on young employees working against sexual favors. The AU reports a " virtually unanimous confirmation of the widespread nature of sexual harassment by those invited to testify ".

Beyond the sexual side, many cases of bullying, harassment and intimidation were reported by almost all employees who came to testify.

The main victims of the harassment are the insecure of the institution.

Corruption

The report also mentions corrupt practices. Officials have validated missions or selected contractors in exchange for services rendered, contracts were overcharged.

In general, the committee describes unhealthy working relationships in several AU organs.

Friday afternoon, President Faki gathered the employees. They remain discreet about what he said. No sanctions announced, it seems. " This is not new. I just hope that there will be actions taken, that we have a healthier Union , "concludes one participant.
