The Minister of Justice announced Friday, December 30 that some defendants could be equipped with an electronic bracelet from 2019. It is an alternative to specific cases of preventive detentions, within the framework of a judicial control and out of cases of terrorism . In all, 300 suspects have been awaiting trial in prison for more than three years.

This electronic bracelet is the government's solution to long detentions pending trial. According to the Attorney General Ismaïla Madior Fall, " the technical procedures were carried out and the process was soon launched ". Defendants will be equipped with bracelets at best 2019.

The equipment will replace the filing warrants, issued in theory to preserve the alleged victims or the conduct of the investigation ... The procedure became widespread, the admission of the minister himself: " imprisonment became commonplace " and systematized. It will therefore be necessary to change the methods of the prosecutors.

The minister promises them clear guidelines. To better guide them on who should wear a bracelet and stay free and who must wait in prison. For the moment, it is impossible to know to which authority these bracelets will be connected. The control procedures are not known. There is urgency: in Senegal the prisons are saturated by these imprisoned defendants.

Of the 10,562 inmates in the country, nearly 4,804 are awaiting trial in prison.
