The newspaper relied on ex-officials of the agency as well as unnamed persons who were familiar with the investigation. Experts of counterintelligence have therefore examined whether Trump's action would have threatened national security.
Trump's lawyer Rudolph Giuliani had replied in the New York Times that he knew nothing of the investigation. Given that they should have started already one and a half years ago, he guesses that "they did not find anything".

After Comeys dismissal, the Ministry of Justice had appointed Special Investigator Robert Mueller. He examined whether there was any collusion between the Trump camp and Russian officials in the presumed Russian influence on the 2016 US presidential election.
Trump has repeatedly referred to these investigations as "witch hunts". The "New York Times," which has won multiple journalism awards for its quality journalism, has repeatedly accused Trump of false reporting.
