Privacy: Kelber warns against automatic face recognition

Berlin (dpa) - The new Federal Data Protection Commissioner Ulrich Kelber has warned against an expansion of video surveillance and automatic face recognition. He considers such demands alone because of the error rate for "highly problematic," the SPD politician told the newspapers of Funke media group. A pilot project for automatic face recognition in video surveillance at Berlin's Südkreuz station showed last year that computer systems achieve a hit rate of more than 80 percent in the current state of the art.
