Several parties and personalities of the Algerian opposition met Wednesday, February 20, 2019 in the capital. Faced with Abdelaziz Bouteflika's candidacy for a fifth term, this meeting aimed to find a single candidate for the opposition. Among the participants, some had already declared their wish to be a candidate, like Ali Benflis, unhappy candidate in 2004 and in 2014, or Abderrezak Makri, the leader of the first Islamist party of the country. But this union of the Algerian opposition seemed impossible to obtain.

They were looking for a unique candidate, who would gather. This Wednesday, they did not find it. However, for Abdellah Djaballah, the leader of the Front for Justice and Development, who initiated this meeting, these discussions are necessary: " It is a duty to respond to the demands of the people, to his refusal of a fifth term . And to value the popular demands and the demonstrations for the abandonment of this mandate. "

After more than four hours of meeting, Islamist parties, opposition figures such as Ali Benflis or Abdelaziz Rahabi, former minister, have not reached an agreement. They regret the absence of some guests, as Lakhdar Benkhelaf, member of the Front for Justice and Development, explains: " Four candidates were summoned with ten political parties and six political figures. Mr. Ali Ghediri was absent today. We learned this news through the press. We do not know the real causes of his absence at this meeting. "

The participants therefore announced that they would continue their discussions and that they would revive an invitation to the former General Ali Ghediri in the coming days.
