Pope Francis expressed concern about homosexuality in the clergy community and expressed the belief that those who are homosexual are not allowed to enter the priesthood in the first place.

Italian daily Corriere Della Sera reported that the pope spoke in an interview in the book "The Power of Calling" (La Fuerza de la Vacacion) of the Spanish bride next week.

The author of the book, Spaniard Fernando Prado, reportedly interviewed the pope at the Pontifical Council in August.

"I think homosexuality is prevalent in our society," the pope said in an interview.

"I am concerned that homosexuals exist within the clergy and the clergy, and this is a very serious problem," he said. "I think that we should not allow clergy support from the beginning."

"There is no place for homosexuality in the priesthood," the pope said. "Therefore, the church should recommend that people with such a tendency not enter the priesthood in the first place."

Although the Catholic Church considers homosexual conduct a sin, the Pope has publicly opposed past discrimination against homosexuals.

The pope said in 2013, shortly after his conquest, "If someone is gay, who can I judge him if he pursues God and good will," the statement was accepted as somewhat eased for homosexuality.
