"The plane was chartered by the National Independent Electoral Commission and transported the equipment necessary for holding the presidential, parliamentary and local elections scheduled for December 30," the Foreign Ministry said.

The Foreign Ministry added that the Russian embassy in Kinshasa is currently holding emergency contacts with representatives of the Congolese authorities to clarify all the circumstances of the incident.

Earlier it became known that the An-26 transport plane crashed near the airport of the capital of the DR Congo.

According to some reports, there were 23 people on board, including three pilots with Russian citizenship.
