Morocco has imposed new travel restrictions on nationals of Mali, Guinea and Congo-Brazzaville since 1 November. Countries that were previously visa-free.

Nationals from Mali, Guinea and Congo-Brazzaville must now obtain an "electronic travel authorization" four days before departure. An approach that is done online.

According to a source at the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is a period of experimentation for these three countries and it is not yet planned for the moment to extend it to other African countries.

The goal, according to the same source, is to streamline applications and to know the reasons for travel of nationals.

This measure was taken while Morocco, again the main gateway to Europe, strengthened its fight against illegal immigration.

Thousands of forced displacements of sub-Saharans from the north to the south of the kingdom have been identified and denounced by the Gadem, anti-racist group of accompaniment and defense of foreigners and migrants. A policy deemed discriminatory by the NGO and which is under pressure from the European Union: in 2018, 1,900 boats dedicated to illegal immigration were seized according to the Moroccan government.
