At the end of July, the Turkish judiciary attacked: The police arrested a 55-year-old German near the city of Iskenderun because of the alleged spread of terrorist propaganda. After several months in prison, the man living in Hamburg was allowed to leave Turkey and leave for Germany. This was reported by the Foreign Office and the lawyer of the man.

His client flew home on Sunday, the lawyer said. The trial of the 55-year-old continues, however - as against other Germans who were accused in Turkey, but were allowed to leave.

According to the lawyer, the next hearing is scheduled for 12 February. The man was one of five Germans "detained for political reasons" in Turkey.

After the failed coup attempt in July 2016, Germans were repeatedly arrested in Turkey. Among them was "World" correspondent Deniz Yücel, who spent a year in Turkish custody and was allowed to travel to Germany in February last year.

Detention and deportation custody

The now released Hamburger, who has only German citizenship, was released after a trial on 29 November from pre-trial detention in Iskenderun in southeastern Turkey, as his daughter and his lawyer at the time confirmed. However, he was then held for more than five weeks, until Sunday, in detention. The consulate in Ankara was informed.

According to the indictment dpa, the prosecutor alleges, among other things, that he shared posts on Facebook that could be considered terrorist propaganda.

It will, for example, go to videos with speeches by members of the banned Kurdish Workers' Party PKK. The defendant, who has Kurdish roots, rejected the accusation. According to the court records, the police anti-terror unit encountered the man's Facebook profile while working.
