Democrat Julian Castro (44) officially qualified for the US presidential election on Saturday. Under the presidency of Barack Obama he was Minister of Housing in 2014.

"I am a candidate for the presidency because it is time for new leadership and because it is time for a new wind", said the former mayor of San Antonio against supporters. "I want to dedicate myself to all Americans, so that they get the opportunities that I have had."

Castro is the grandson of a Mexican immigrant. He expressed strong criticism during his application of the policy of the current American president Donald Trump. As Castro wins the election, he becomes the first 'hispanic' president of the US.

During his speech Castro expressed himself as an advocate of an American health care system that is accessible to all Americans. He also supported the Black Lives Matter movement and cited the need for action against climate change.

The former mayor is the second official candidate on behalf of the Democrats. Earlier, Senator Elizabeth Warren announced that she wanted to participate in the elections. Her candidacy is not yet official, but she has already set up a reconnaissance committee to prepare for her campaign.
