The Israeli Navy has rescued a French sailor who has been drifting in the Mediterranean for weeks, the army said on Friday. The sailor was recovered Thursday night as he sailed rudderless radio near the shores of the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian territory between the Israeli shores and the Egyptian border, the army said on Twitter. An army spokeswoman described the sailor as a fisherman from Egypt sailing towards Gaza. Injured in the leg, he was transferred to a Tel-Aviv hospital, she added.

The identity of the man remains unknown. The army has published a photo of a smiling salt-and-pepper man wearing a sea jacket and hat and surrounded by soldiers aboard what appears to be an Israeli boat. We do not know everything about the origin and identity of the sailor. The Israeli army did not provide more details on the subject. The French Embassy in Tel Aviv said it had been informed by the Israeli army but did not have any more information.
