Humanitarians are worried about the lack of interest in the Burundian refugee crisis. Nearly 345,000 people are currently spread between Uganda, DRC, Rwanda and especially Tanzania. This Thursday morning, from Nairobi, Kenya, 35 organizations have appealed for donations to fund aid for the next two years. At least $ 300 million is needed for 2019.

Reduced food rations, sometimes overcrowded classes, canceled trainings: lack of funding has forced aid workers to sacrifice some of their aid. The appeal launched this Thursday morning is wide, ranging from basic needs such as food and medicine, to programs to help refugees launch professional projects.

Living conditions in the camps are worrying, with security deteriorating, according to Kate Moger. The Regional Director of the International Rescue Committee noted increased anxiety, stress, gender-based violence, and child labor.

200,000 returns by 2020

The case of Tanzania is also closely watched, especially since it alone hosts 200,000 refugees. " Most countries keep their borders open. But in Tanzania, there is pressure for refugees to leave. There have also been restrictions on the border and on freedom of movement, "says Catherine Wiesner, HRC coordinator for the Burundian crisis.

As for the return to Burundi, it continues. Humanitarians expect nearly 200,000 departures until 2020. They accompany the movement but do not encourage it. " The reasons that led to this crisis have not disappeared. We therefore insist on individual choice. Every refugee must be able to make a free and enlightened decision , "says Catherine Wiesner. Uncertainty should continue to increase as the 2020 presidential election approaches.
