Los Angeles (dpa) - "work without an author" goes for Germany in the race for the Golden Globe. The artist portrait by director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck was nominated in the category "Best Non-English Film". There, among other things, the Mexican film "Roma" occurs.
Last January, Fatih Akin's NSU drama "Out of Nowhere" won the Golden Globe as Best Foreign Film. Henckel von Donnersmarck had the chance to win a Golden Globe in 2007 with the Stasi drama "The Lives of Others", but at the award ceremony he went empty-handed. He brought in the same year the foreign Oscar.
Daniel Brühl also has chances again for a Golden Globe. The 40-year-old was nominated on Thursday for his role in the crime series "The Alienist" as the best actor in a series. Brühl hunts in "The Alienist" in New York in 1896 as a criminal psychologist a pedophile serial killer. It is his debut in US television serial. Brühl was nominated in 2014 for his role as racing driver Niki Lauda in the Formula 1 drama "Rush - Everything for the Victory" ever for a Globe as the best supporting actor in a film.
With six nominations, the political satire "Vice - the second man" is the favorite in the race for the Golden Globes. The love drama "A Star is Born" with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, the biopic "Green Book" and the tragicomedy "The Favorite - intrigue and lunacy" each have five chances to win.
In Vice, Christian Bale plays former US Vice President Dick Cheney. The work of Adam McKay is nominated for Best Picture (in the category of Musical or Comedy), for directing, as well as for lead actor Bale and supporting actress Amy Adams. The film should come at the end of February 2019 in German cinemas.
Pop star Lady Gaga (32) has already had a Golden Globe since 2016 for her TV role in "American Horror Story: Hotel", but now the singer with her first movie starring role in "A Star is Born" could win the trophy win the best drama actress. In this category she meets, among others, Nicole Kidman ("Destroyer") and comedy star Melissa McCarthy, who shows her serious side in the drama "Can You Ever Forgive Me?".
Lady Gaga's co-star Bradley Cooper has twice the odds of winning the directorial debut "A Star is Born": as the best director and lead actor in a drama. Rami Malek will star in this category for his role as Queen-Frontman Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody" and John Washington for "BlacKkKlansman". The son of Hollywood star Denzel Washington plays in the racist satire of Spike Lee a black policeman who infiltrates a group of Ku Klux Klan. "BlacKkKlansman" has three other odds, including best drama and directing.
In the area of television this year, the best series including the espionage thriller "The Americans", the British police drama "Bodyguard" and "Homecoming" with Julia Roberts are nominated for the return of soldiers. Chances for the Golden Globe's best musical or comedy series are "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" (Amazon) and "Kidding" (Showtime) with Jim Carrey.
The Golden Globes are considered the most important US film awards after the Oscars. The golden globe trophies will be awarded on January 6, 2019 in Beverly Hills. The Federation of Foreign Press (HFPA) awards in 25 film and television categories are decided by a small group of international journalists working in Hollywood.
