Kai Verbij has successfully defended his European title sprint on Saturday in the Italian Collalbo. The South Hollander did not give up his generous leading position in the rankings at the final 1,000 meters.

The 24-year-old Verbij started the final distance with a 1.95 second lead on the Noor Havard Lorentzen and 2.90 seconds on Henrik Rukke, also from Norway.

The Team Reggeborgh driver won both 500 and 1,000 meters on Friday and was also the strongest on the second 500 meters on Saturday.

Verbij drove an impressive time of 34.93 at that distance and was therefore only just above the track record of Jeremy Wotherspoon (34.89)

The 24-year-old Verbij won the first edition of the European Championship sprint two years ago. In the same year he also crowned himself as world champion sprint.
