Milan (dpa) - favorite fright Eintracht Frankfurt has celebrated the next magical European night and can seriously hope for the second international title after 1980.
The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup won impressively in the Europa League Round of 16 with 1-0 (1-0) at Inter Milan and is thus again in the round of the last eight for the first time in 24 years. In front of about 50,000 spectators scorer Luka Jovic (6th minute) provided for the goalless first leg for the decision.
The team of coach locked in Milan Adi Hütter is the last German representative in the European Cup after the Champions League of Champions FC Bayern Munich. After successes over Lazio, Olympique Marseille, Apollon Limassol, Shakhtar Donetsk and traditional club Inter, the Hesse are at the draw of the quarter-final games (11 and 18 April) on Friday in the title favorites such as Chelsea or Naples certainly no wish opponent.
"We got better and better and kept Inter away from the gate. That was the key to victory, "said defender Martin Hinteregger. "Now it's going on in the quarter-finals where that ends, we'll see. Let's see who we get as opponents, then the journey can go on, »said the Austrian.
Fear of Inter? Not at Eintracht. Assisted by Hütter's assistant Christian Peitinger, the Hessians offensively support a home team in the style of a home team, supported by the Europa League away record of around 15,000 fans in the upper tier of the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium.
After three minutes there was not much to the first goal cheering. A sharp shot from Filip Kostic could defuse Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, Haller puts the rebound to the crossbar. Three minutes later, Jovic was wide awake and took advantage of a header blunder by Stefan de Vrij mercilessly. The Serb overcame the Dutchman and cleverly lugged over Handanovic - the early lead was perfect.
The locked after his bottle-kick in the first leg Hütter had to worry in the stands in his seat a number on Sport Board Fredi Bobic and former striker Axel Kruse. Inter had little to offer. Again and again, long passes flew in the direction of the Eintracht gate, which did not seem dangerous. As Keita Baldé (19th) after a positional error by Martin Hinteregger alone on Kevin Trapp zulief, the goalkeeper could clarify. Frankfurt was very stable in the back, defensive chief Makoto Hasebe repeatedly demonstrated his impressive positional position.
And even the 2: 0 was possible. Sebastien Haller (27 ') hit the bar but was just offside. Mijat Gacinovic (39.) ran half-way to Handanovic alone, but did not put enough pressure behind the ball. Jovic (40 ') shot just over the bar.
"We must not let up," said sporting director Bruno Hübner on RTL in the half-time break. The concord continued its concentrated style against now more offensive Milan. And there were counter chances. Haller's (55 ') shot was defused after a fine push by Kostic from Handanovic. But caution was needed now. Matteo Politano (56.) equalized just in front of a long-range shot just over. It was also a sharp shot from Milan Skriniar (71.), which was deflected by Hasebe.
Inter was running out of time. The Eintracht stood defensively to the outstanding Sebastian Rode outstanding. Offensively, however, she made too little of the spaces that now offer her. So twisted at 5: 3-superior number of otherwise famous Kostic (77.). Jovic headed Handanovic from within a few meters in the first of six minutes. Milan did not punish the negligence - the next Eintracht party could begin.
