A delegation from Equatorial Guinea is currently touring Europe to promote human rights on its soil. The aim is to restore the image of the country, long criticized by NGOs and international institutions in the field of human rights.

It is in Europe that we decide on sanctions or on the contrary economic partnerships with Africa, says the Deputy Prime Minister for human rights Equatorial Guinean Alfonso Nsue Mokuy, which is trying a seduction operation. After the European Parliament, he has to go to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.

" We want to circulate real information about our country ," he says. We move forward but we see that for the rest, we have not moved forward, we are still in the same situation. That's why we are going to explain ourselves to the United Nations in Geneva . "

" Deterioration of the human rights situation "

But human rights activists and non-governmental organizations still denounce the pressures, arbitrary detentions and even cases of torture suffered by political opponents. For Severo Moto, president of the Party of Progress, exiled politician in Spain, the situation does not evolve in the country.

" Equatorial Guinea, with Obiang Nguema, it's impossible to respect human rights because the program of Mr. Obiang and the dictatorship is to kill people, " he says.

Last year, the European Union noted a " sharp deterioration of the human rights situation " following an abortive coup in the country. President-in-Office Teodoro Obiang Nguema has been at the head of the state since 1979. He is accused of massively diverting state money to his own ends and suppressing the opposition.
