Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (du) have announced the launch of a joint venture to provide nearly 10,000 to 10,000 Dubai taxis with free Wi-Fi.

This came during the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Authority and du on the sidelines of their participation in GITEX 2018. The agreement was signed by RTA Director-General and Chief Executive Officer Mattar Al Tayer and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company Mohammed Al Husseini.

Ahmed Bahrozian, Executive Director of the Public Transport Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said that the agreement provides for the immediate installation of the required equipment in the taxi cabins, and that all fleet vehicles will be covered by the six franchisees operating in Dubai within one year from the date of signing the agreement.

"Free Wi-Fi allows taxi drivers to surf the Internet on their smartphones, tablets and laptops, which saves them time to accomplish many of the fastest tasks on their travels," said Behrozian. He added that the RTA is always working on the latest technology in cooperation with the service providers in the country.
