The Federal Government also wants to classify Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Georgia as safe countries of origin. The Greens are against it. The vote scheduled for this Friday in the Bundesrat will now be postponed. This was announced by the Vice-President of the Landkammer, Dietmar Woidke (SPD) from Brandenburg, at the beginning of the session.

The provincial government of Thuringia made an appropriate request, previously also the black-green ruled Hessen considered a shift.

The Bundestag had already approved the enlargement of the states. Last year, 7,885 people from these four states had applied for asylum.

Before the meeting it had become apparent that the bill would not find a majority in the state chamber, because of the countries with government participation of the Greens and Left Party only Baden-Wuerttemberg wanted to agree. The parliamentary group of the Greens rejects the concept of safe countries of origin in general. She also refers to the discrimination and persecution of homosexuals in North Africa.

Supporters of the reform in the Union had recently pointed out that asylum seekers from Georgia and the Maghreb countries are more likely to be delinquent than those seeking protection of other nationalities.

Safe countries of origin are states where it is suspected that there is usually no political persecution, inhuman or degrading punishment or treatment. By changing the asylum law, the federal government wants to make it easier to decide on applications from people from these states. The deportation should also be accelerated.
