Sources said the island of killing three Egyptian army and wounding five others in two separate attacks, one south of Rafah and the second east of Arish in the province of North Sinai.

The sources said that one soldier was killed and two others were wounded in the targeting of a military force south of Rafah. Two soldiers were killed and three others were wounded in the bombing of a military vehicle with an improvised explosive device east of the city of Arish.

The Egyptian army announced on Sunday the elimination of two of the "leading leaders of terrorist elements in the province of North Sinai."

Egypt launched Operation Sinai 2018 in February to root out what it calls "pro-Islamic militants" whom it accuses of launching attacks over the past few years that have killed hundreds of security forces and civilians.

The operation has so far killed more than 350 "takfiris" as the Egyptian army calls them, and more than 30 soldiers, according to army figures.

International human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized the consequences of civilian life in northern Sinai for the overall operation.
