Gerald Darmanin criticized on Twitter a measure in favor of the elected officials of the small municipalities that the Senators had just voted. In response, the high assembly suspended the session on the examination of the draft budget 2019.

After the controversial tweet about the Yellow Vests, Gerald Darmanin has again created controversy via the social network. In a new tweet he criticized a measure just passed by the Senate in favor of elected small municipalities.

"At the initiative of the Republicans the Senate has just voted a 125% increase in the tax deduction of elected officials, which amounts to exempt from tax up to 1500EUR / month on their allowances! Obviously I will oppose it at second reading in the National Assembly , " tweeted Gérald Darmanin, who was not present in the Senate.

The senators unanimously adopted, in the framework of the draft budget for 2019, an amendment providing for the compensation received by the mayors of small municipalities, the partial return to the pre-2017 tax regime, which is more favorable.

Suspended session

At the request of the leader of Senators LR Bruno Retailleau, who denounced "an attack on democracy, and even against the Republic" , the session was first suspended and then lifted until the end of the Conference of Presidents convened Saturday morning, in the presence of the Minister in charge of Relations with Parliament, Marc Fesneau. "There is tired of this government slap on the elected. This government has a common thread, it's the elected bashing. What M.Darmanin does, we can not accept, " then launched Bruno Retailleau, requesting a suspension of meeting. On the resumption, Mr. Retailleau announced that after consultation with Senate Speaker Gérard Larcher, a conference of presidents would be held Saturday morning.

"To settle a serious injustice"

"We did not want to grant any tax privileges. We simply wanted to go back to a previous situation to resolve a serious injustice , " said LR leader in the Senate, denouncing " a lie " of the minister. It is about " back on a measure we had not measured the consequences " , opined Claude Raynal (PS), while Yvon Collin defended " a measure of fairness, not a new privilege " .

"Refusal of contempt"

"We want to mark together that we refuse this contempt," said Vincent Capo-Canellas (centrist), denouncing "quasi-insulting" remarks by Gerald Darmanin. Eric Bocquet (majority of the ECRC) pointed out "an unacceptable initiative in the current climate " . State Secretary of Public Accounts Olivier Dussopt said he " relayed " to the Prime Minister the request of Bruno Retailleau who wanted " to know if this tweet is part of the official communication of the government. " The government " takes act " of the suspension of the work of the Senate, he added, adding that Marc Fesneau would be present at the Conference of Presidents.
