Congo-Brazzaville records its first victory in the 2019 CAN qualifiers. At home, the Red Devils beat Liberia (3-1). They return temporarily to Zimbabwe and the DRC at the top of Group G. Liberia sees its chances of playing the next CAN in Cameroon dwindle further.

After a defeat against DRC's neighbor (3-1) in June 2017 and a draw against Zimbabwe (1-1) in September, Congo needed a win, midway through the playoffs of the CAN 2019. And the Red Devils got the result they needed from Thursday, October 11 at the Alphonse Massemba-Debat Stadium in Brazzaville, the scene of the match against Liberia.

Congo's two " Prince " land Liberia in second half

Under the eyes of their enthusiastic supporters, the players of Brazilian coach Valdo took control of the game in the 15th minute very well. On a quick counter-attack, the Congolese opened the scoring with Merveil Ndockyt, the well-appointed: his perfectly balanced volley in the penalty area did not leave a chance for goalkeeper Boison Wynney.

Liberia's Lone Stars reacted early in the second half. At the entrance to the surface, striker Sam Johnson struck a heavy shot that put groggy fans of Congo-Brazzaville (47th). In the stands, Liberian President George Weah appreciated. But the last word came back to the locals. Prince Ibara deployed his 1.88m to give the advantage to his head (62nd). Then, it is the captain Prince Oniangué, also of the head, which ended the debates at the end of the meeting (90e).

In the Group G standings, Congo-Brazzaville breathes a little better after these first victories. The Red Devils occupy 3rd place with 4 points (0 difference in goals), tied temporarily with Zimbabwe (+3) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (+2). The hierarchy will however move Saturday, October 13 with the meeting DRC-Zimbabwe. With a single point (one draw and two losses and a goal difference of -5), Liberia sees its dream of playing the next CAN in Cameroon crumbling. The Lone Stars have not played this competition since the 2002 edition.
