United Kingdom and Gibraltar European Union membership referendum

Michel Barnier, Brexit's chief negotiator for the European Union, has shown himself ready to renegotiate Britain. However, the British would have to move, said Barnier in an interview with Deutschlandfunk. The contract negotiated with Prime Minister Theresa May could no longer be opened. But if the British wanted something more for the future than just a free trade area, then they could deal with it again.

Barnier also called for clear signals: "I do not think we need more time, but we need decisions," he said. "If the British government makes no proposals, it will be a no-deal Brexit." The previous evening, he had already made it clear: "Speaking against a Brexit without a contract will not stop Brexit without a contract."

At the same time he rejected a time limit of the so-called "backstop". This is a special solution designed to prevent a hard border between Britain and Ireland. That is why bitter agitation had been fought in the previous negotiations. "What we have negotiated is the best result we can achieve," Barnier said.

Brexit Player: hesitating, doubting, tugging

The British drew several red lines to blockade, Barnier said. They no longer wanted an internal market with the EU and did not recognize the European Court of Justice. They rejected free trade and passenger traffic and wanted to be independent in trade policy. "If there's anything on the British side with these red lines, yes, then we're ready to talk about it, I hope it happens and that's possible." However, the EU can not make any concessions on its basic principles, such as passenger transport.

At the same time, according to the Irish Independent, Irish police are considering stationing hundreds of officers on the border with the British province of Northern Ireland in the event of an unregulated Brexit. Such a measure would be discussed as an emergency precautionary measure by the police.

Italy is also drafting emergency measures for an unregulated Brexit: Transitional measures have been put together by the Ministry of Finance. In the event of a disorderly Brexit, these should ensure that there are no disruptions in the financial markets. The government will implement the arrangements by emergency decree, should this be necessary, the ministry said.
