The British House of Commons voted Monday night against the government and in favor of an amendment to take control of the parliamentary agenda. An unprecedented event in the United Kingdom.

The British Prime Minister lost control of the House of Commons on Monday night. Deputies, including some 30 Conservatives and a few ministers, voted against the government's orders.

In addition, three state secretaries of Theresa May's government resigned Monday night in disagreement with her strategy on leaving the EU, during a dramatic evening that saw the British parliament vote to regain control of the Brexit agenda.

Richard Harrington (Industry), Alistair Burt (Foreign Affairs) and Steve Brine (Health) all resigned in order to vote freely in favor of the Letwin amendment.

This amendment should give the House of Commons the opportunity to hold a series of indicative votes on various Brexit options in the hope that a majority of MEPs will come out in favor of the same solution. Among the six options that will be proposed, that of a second European referendum. MEPs will also have the choice to vote for an agreement similar to that of Norway, permanent membership of the customs union or even complete cancellation of Brexit.

These votes, which are expected to take place on Wednesday, are in theory only indicative votes, which until now have never been held in the House of Commons. Theresa May declined to say whether she would respect their outcome but this defeat marks a turning point in the chaos that has become the Brexit negotiations.

The vote of British MPs Monday evening by which they have taken control of the agenda of the exit of the EU is " a dangerous precedent, " responded the Ministry of Brexit in a statement. " This amendment reverses the balance between our democratic institutions and creates a dangerous and unpredictable precedent for the future ."
