The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has called on the authorities in Sudan to give priority to the protection of children and their rights to education and health in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Farhan Haq, spokesman for the UN secretary-general, quoted the organization as saying it had seen reports that children had been killed and wounded during the ongoing unrest in the country. And stressed the need to protect them.

"In recent months, Sudan has witnessed an unprecedented increase in the cost of living, lack of bread and fuel and increased poverty among children and their families, forcing some families to keep their children out of school," Farhan said.

The spokesman stressed that more children in Sudan need health and nutrition care.

The Sudan Central Committee of Doctors announced the deaths of two people - one child and one doctor - in the protests in the capital Khartoum last Thursday.

In a statement, the committee said the child was named Mohammed Obaid, who died of a gunshot wound to the head and a doctor.

Sudan has been witnessing almost daily protests since December 19 amid worsening economic conditions turned into a demand to end the rule of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, which lasted thirty years.

The gathering of Sudanese professionals - a group of trade unions leading protests - called on demonstrators to gather in 17 districts of the capital Khartoum on Thursday and head for the presidential palace, the largest of its kind since the protests began.
